Mona Shores and Western Michigan Christian high schools are venturing into familiar territory on Saturday – the boys golf state finals.

Shores will battle the 15-team field at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University. WM Christian travels to Forest Akers West on the campus of Michigan State University.

Mona Shores will compete in Division 1 after finishing second in last week’s regional competition at Muskegon Country Club. The Sailors also finished runnerup in the districts, to an old nemesis, Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central.

Forest Hills Central is seeking its third state title in four years. In 2010, they it finished second.

Mona Shores, led by junior Reed Hrynewich, finish fifth last year. The Sailors last state title was in 2005.

Other Sailors competing at state include juniors Andrew VanAelst and Joel Maire, along with freshmen Mitchell White and Glen Kastelic.

Western Michigan Christian, which finished sixth last year and was state runnerup in 2010, came in third behind Fowler and Manistee Catholic in last week’s regional competition.

The Warriors are led by a pair of juniors, Alec Breit and Henry McGannon. Breit was the regional medalist with a 74 and McGannon was the district medalist with a 72.

Other Warrior golfers include senior Devin Kohn, along with freshmen Erik Bean and John Larson.
