A bit of a stumble on Saturday resulted in the Muskegon Community College men’s cross country team to a sixth-place finish in the NJCAA Region XII Cross Country Championships at Grand Woods Park in Lansing.
MCC finished sixth out of 12 teams.
Alex Drew, from Coopersville, was the Jayhawks’ top runner. He finished 21st among 80 runners.
The Jayhawks’ usual top runners, Mathias Waterstadt and Kyle Star had been battling illness throughout the week.
“Until this race, our top 4 have been very strong up front,” said Coach Dan Fishel.  “Alex and Christian Seaver still had solid races, but I felt bad for Mathias and Kyle getting sick at the wrong time.  I’m sure they will be healthy, though, by nationals.”
Mitch Clark, Lucas Johnson and Matt Almond  ran solid races to round out the top 7.
The team will also be going to the NJCAA nationals at Rend Lake College in Ina, Ill.  on Nov. 10.
