The opening weekend of wrestling for the Muskegon Community College Jayhawks proved to be highly successful.

On Friday night, the Jayhawks defeated Triton 40-14 and Jamestown 43-9 in dual meets.

That momentum carried into Saturday’s Ben McMullen Open at Bartels-Rode Gymnasium.

Nine wrestlers placed in the top 4 in their respective weight classes on Saturday.

Reed City’s Steven Ruppert, a sophomore, captured the 141-pound division. Freshman Garett Edwards, from Richmond won the 157-pound class and 165-pounder Dillon Francisco also was a champion. Francisco is from Comstock Park.

“The kids wrestled really well this weekend,” MCC coach Mark Brunger said. “I am very pleased with the effort and sportsmanship of the team. These are great, hardworking kids with a lot of potential.”
