Spring Lake girls basketball coach Rich Hyde knew all about Mona Shores’ standout Jasmyn Walker.

He figured if they could limit her to 10-12 points, his team had a shot at knocking off the Sailors. Well, Walker did score 12 points, but it was her helpers that carried the Sailors to a 51-31 victory in the nightcap of the Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame Girls Basketball Classic.

“I thought Molly Miedema absolutely did a fantastic job on what we needed to do,” Hyde said. “We keyed on their superstar and they had their surrounding cast filled in very nice for them.”

That would include Morgan Smith with 15 points and Amy Gillings with seven.

Mona Shores shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and grabbed a 29-18 lead.

“This is, by far, our best overall team effort where everybody stepped up to do their job and play their role,” said Shores coach Brad Kurth, whose team is 1-4, but lost three of those games by one possession.

Kurth also was pleased with his team’s effort on the defense end. They finished with 19 steals. Morgan and Meredith Smith were key members of that defensive effort. Walker had five steals while Morgan and Meredith had four steals each. Walker also pulled down eight rebounds.

Brittany Beeler led Spring Lake with 11 points and Jewel Wiersma finished with eight points and 13 rebounds.
