The Muskegon Community College wrestling team turned in a dominating performancet this past weekend at the Grand Valley State University Laker Classic.

Five Jayhawk wrestlers were crowned champions in the 10 weight classes. In all, 13 wrestlers finished in the top three of the top three of their weight classes.

Champions included Steven Ruppert (141), Riley Boomer (174), Zach Johnston (184), Tom Bolday (197) and Brett Martin (285).

“I couldn’t be prouder of the performance,” MCC coach Mark Brunger said. “The kids just responded so well after all the adversity the last seven days has brought. These young men are resilient and tenacious.  We are excited and primed for the post season.”  

There were two weight classes – 174 and 285 – where the Jayhawks placed first, second and third.

Other notable performances included Andrew Nold, who was third at 133 pounds, Chase Singleton who was second at 149, Dillon Francisco, who was third at 165, Justin Johnson second at 174,Trevor Curtice third at 174, Shawn Chamberlain second at 285 and Jeffrey Tautolo third at 285.

Next weekend, the 16th-ranked Jayhawks head to Triton College in River Grove, Ill. to compete in the Central District team championship and individual berths will be at stake for the NJCAA National Championships. Those will be Feb. 21-22 in Des Moines, Iowa.
