If it weren’t for a miserable third quarter, the Hart Pirates might have celebrated their first football win of the season Thursday night.

The Pirates dueled Onekama to a 12-12 halftime draw, giving local fans reason for hope. But the visitors tallied 20 points in the third quarter and headed home with a 40-18 non-conference win.

The Pirates led for a while in the second quarter, following an 11-yard touchdown pass from Joe Phillips to Brady Tate and a 25-yard scoring scamper by Brett Bonstell.

Onekama tied the score before halftime with a 60-yard kickoff return Jonas Lamont following a Hart touchdown.

Hart grabbed another lead early in the second half with a 31-yard touchdown run by Bonstell. But then Onekama quarterback Tyler Johnson took control of the game by throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass and adding scoring runs of three, 30 and 15 yards.

“He got loose a few times,’ said Hart coach Steve Hlady “That was the story of the game.”

Bonstell finished with 116 yards rushing while Tate added 49 for Hart.
