The Ludington Orioles took advantage of a turnover-prone Manistee squad to register a 38-0 opening night victory Thursday in non-league football action.

Quarterback Chad Large led the way for Ludington with two touchdown passes and two scoring  runs. He was 6-for-8 passing for 95 yards with two touchdowns and had 13 carries for 50 yards and two touchdowns.

The Orioles benefited from great field position throughout the game, due to a rash of Manistee turnovers. Ludington had two interceptions, a blocked punt and a fumble recovery, all of which resulted in scores.

The Orioles started their barrage in the first quarter with a 15 yard touchdown pass from Large to Alex English. Large added another score in the first quarter with a 41-yard touchdown run.

Large added a 16-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Follrath in the second quarter, while Ryan Bowen contributed a 41-yard field goal.

The Orioles scoring parade continued in the second half  with a 13-yard run by Large and a 41-yard burst by Logan Sorenson.

The final score could have been much worse, Ludington had four touchdowns called back on penalties.

English totaled 3 rushes for 21 yards, two catches for 34 yards and one touchdown for the victors. Follrath added three receptions for 40 yards.

English led Ludington’s defensive effort with 11 tackles while Jake Kzczynski added eight with two sacks.

“We made some mistakes early on, but I felt as the game went along the kids started to grasp things and played better as a team,” said Ludington coach Charlie Gunsell. “We still have a long way to go.”
