The Muskegon Community College women’ soccer team came up just short in a 2-1 loss Sunday to Owens Community College.

Abbie Groll and Jill Burkholder scored first-half goals to give Owens the halftime lead. The Jayhawks fought back with a goal from Timera Crosby in the second half, but that was as close as they could get.

Anna Carmean had an assist for MCC while goaltender Hayley Twigg added five saves.

MCC Coach Josh Watson credited his team’s strong defensive play and determination to overcome the early deficit.

“I am very proud of how the ladies responded in the second half today,” Watson said.
