There was still hope for the Whitehall football team at halftime of Thursday’s season opener against Kelloggsville.

The Vikings scored a touchdown with just a few seconds remaining in the first half to claw back within striking distance. But then Kelloggsville opened up the floodgates with 14 points in each of the final two quarters to cruise to a 47-14 nonleague football victory.

Kelloggsville rushed to a 19-0 lead in the first half with touchdown runs of 49, 13 and nine yards. Whitehall punched in a score just before the break with a seven-yard run by Zerren Aylor.

The hosts secured the win with 28 points in the second half. The scoring burst included touchdown runs of 39 and 19 yards along with a 36-yard fumble recovery and runback.

Tripp Filman led Whitehall with six rushes for 103 yards. Davonte Burks added eight carries for 75 yards. Javon Gozner paced the Viking defense with 10 tackles, followed by Gunnar Lamb and Keenan Aylor with nine apiece.
