The 84th Western Michigan Yachting Association Championship Regatta will be hosted by the White Lake Yacht Club starting Thursday. The event runs through Sunday on White Lake.

The four-day regatta will host competitions in the E, C, MC, Butterfly, Laser, Melges 17 and Optimist classes.

The WMYA started its annual regatta in 1930 on Muskegon Lake. That original regatta had just three classes of boats: A Scows, C Scows and E Scows.

The Spring Lake Yacht Club, the Muskegon Yacht Club and the White Lake Yacht Club are the three original clubs who started the organization in December of 1929.

Nearly 85 years later, the WMYA has grown to twenty member clubs and annually hosts the four day regatta to promote amateur yachting and yacht racing on the inland lakes.
