The Muskegon Lumberjacks fell victim to a tough second period and dropped a 5-3 decision to the Sioux City Musketeers Saturday in the second game of the United States Hockey League’s preseason Atlantic Challenge at the Richard J. Codey Arena in West Orange, New Jersey.

The Lumberjacks drew first blood in the first period when Cullen Hurley tipped a shot from Matheson Iacopelli at the 7:37 mark.

The Musketeers evened the game at 1-1 as Cedric Lacroix tipped in  a loose puck near Muskegon’s goal.

Sioux City pulled away in the second period with goals from Trevor Olson, Jake Montgomery, Brandon Hawkins and Jarod Thomas. Trevor Morbeck scored the lone goal of the period for the Lumberjacks, who trailed 5-2 at the second intermission.

Muskegon’s Tommy Panico scored the only goal of the third period, but it was too little, too late for the Lumberjacks, who failed to score on several power play opportunities down the stretch.

Sioux City outshot the Lumberjacks 35-26. Goalie Eric Schierhorn had 30 saves for Muskegon.

The Lumberjacks are now 1-1 in the tournament.

Muskegon will conclude the  2013 Atlantic Challenge tomorrow morning against the Sioux Falls Stampede at 11 a.m.  Next weekend the Lumberjacks will participate in the USHL Fall Classic East in Indianapolis, Indiana to conclude their preseason schedule.
