MUSKEGON — Whitehall’s Vikings and the Reeths-Puffer Rockets took away team honors in the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association cross country meet on Friday at University Park Golf Course.

Whitehall repeated as the boys’ team champion by lowering its team total of points from 43 in 2012 to 22 this year.

In the girls race, Reeths-Puffer Rockets had 45 points and slipped past the defending champion Mona Shores Sailors who finished with 49.

Whitehall dominated in the boys competition. Not only did Keaton Smith win the individual honors by turning in a 16:50.33 time for Whitehall, but the Vikings also grabbed the third, fourth, seventh and 12th spots.

Brayden Berson took third in 17:20.45, Roger Champion fourth in 17:25.21, Alex Dennis seventh in 17:51.40 and Alex Mark 12th in 17:54.49 for Whitehall.

Oakridge’s Ryan Ruel broke up the Whitehall stranglehold on top by coming in second in 17:18.56 although Oakridge did not place in the team standings.

Fruitport’s Aaron King finished seventh in 17:27.36 while King’s teammates, Noah Hendricks and Codey Moore, came in eighth in 17:45.88 and 10th in 17:48.60, respectively.

Braxton Snuffer, of Western Michigan Christian, placed sixth with a 17:30.55 clocking.

Connor Pena, of Reeths-Puffer, placed ninth with a 17:47.72 time.

The final boys’ team standings had Whitehall at 22 followed by Fruitport at 107, Mona Shores 112, Muskegon High School 135, Reeths-Puffer 141, Orchard View 145, Ravenna 186, Holton 186, Western Michigan Christian 187, North Muskegon 220 and Montague 266.

In the varsity girls’ race, Whitehall had the individual county champion in Jessica Harris who had a 19:07.34 clocking. Jackie Seward, of Mona Shores, finished second in 19:29.81.

Reeths-Pufer had three placers in the top 10. Maryssa Depies came in third in 19:57.93, Micha Peel fifth in 19:58.98 and Tess Gearhart sixth in 20:19.20. The Rockets also picked up places from McKenzie Richardson at 10th and Kendra Irvine at 22nd.

Mona Shores picked up a ninth from Sarah Resterhouse, an 11th from Morgan Dennison, 14th from Annika Cotner and 15th from Sam Morse.

The final team scores had Whitehall third with 62 points in the girls’ race while Ravenna had 114, North Muskegon 138, Orchard View 174, Western Michigan Christian 187, Oakridge 225, Fruitport 237 and Muskegon 270.

Mona Shores won the boys’ junior varsity race with 25 points and Whitehall had  32 for second. Robert Schnieder, of Whitehall, was the boys’ JV champion with a 19:13.08 clocking.

In the girls’ junior varsity race, Reeths-Puffer won the title with 30 points. Mona Shores had 37 points, Whitehall 56 and Ravenna 120. Kara Green was the individual JV champion with a 22:16.01 clocking.

Muskegon Community College’s men’s and women’s cross country teams hosted the county meets.
