Local Sports JournalThe Newaygo Lions girls basketball team gave Chippewa Hills a run for its money before dropping a 56-49 decision Thursday in Central State Activities Association action.

The Lions fell behind by 13 points at halftime, and couldn’t overcome the early deficit with a stronger second half. Newaygo turned in a strong defensive performance with 13 steals.

Shelby Boyd had a team-high 16 points for the Lions. Riley Knight added nine points, four steals, four assists and four rebounds.

Newaygo’s record fell to 0-3. Chippewa Hills is 3-0.
