The host Newaygo Lion girls basketball team need a big effort in the middle-two quarters en route to a 53-41 victory over Holton in Central States Activities Conference hoops action.

Holton (3-7, 3-6) led early, taking a 10-8 lead after one. But the Lions (5-5, 5-4) went to work in the second, outscoring the Red Devils 20-13 edge to lead 28-23 at the break. Newaygo put the game away behind a 14-8 third-quarter run.

Newaygo’s junior point guard Madie Giese paced the Lions with 20 points and nine steals, while senior forward Shelby Boyd had 12 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore Riley Knight had 10 points in the win.

Junior forward Jacki Stone finished with 19 points, while junior Rachel Younts had 11 points in for the Red Devils.
