MUSKEGON — The Muskegon Big Reds moved up to 33rd in the USA Today Sports Super 25 boys basketball ratings announced today, Feb. 18.

Muskegon’s two victories last week boosted its season record to 17-0. The jump from 36th to 33rd in the poll marked the seventh week in a row the Big Reds had been rated. Muskegon started its climb up the polls after being 49th in the Jan. 7 ratings.

The rating also marked the fourth week in a row Muskegon has been in the 30s in the poll which tracks the top 50 prep boys basketball teams in the country. This year’s poll is now in its eighth week.

The top five teams nationally remained the same. Mater Dei, of Santa Ana, Calif., is rated first in the country with its 27-0 record.

Rounding out the top five are Chicago Curie (22-1); Montverde, Fla., Academy (24-1); Rainier Beach of Seattle, Wash. (22-0); and White Station of Memphis, Tenn. (26-1).

Curie’s only loss remains a 73-67 overtime defeat at Muskegon in early January when its best player had to sit out a one-game suspension that day.

Michigan has two prep teams ranked in Muskegon and Detroit Pershing. Pershing is now 17-2 for the season and is ranked 48th. Pershing had been as high as 40th in the Jan. 28 poll, but the Doughboys had not been ranked in the last two listings.
