RIVER GROVE, Ill. – The Muskegon Community College wrestling team finished second at the Central District/National Qualifier tournament on Sunday.  The Jayhawk wrestlers qualified in 9 of the 10 weight classes for the national tournament.

Lincoln College won the championship with 99.5 points and finished four points ahead of MCC’s 95.5 in the tournament scoring. Harper College finished third with 83.5 points, Triton College was fourth with 29.5 points and Waubonsee College followed up in fifth place with 14 points.

“While we fell short of our goal to come in here and win the district, we are still in a good position to perform well at the national tournament,” said MCC coach Mark Brunger.  “We have qualified nine wrestlers and all of them will be major point scorers for us at nationals.”

The Jayhawk team had an outstanding semifinal round sending nine wrestlers into championship matches and had one in the consolation round, building a 22 point team lead.

Zack Cooper (Freshman/Whitehall/133) was the lone Jayhawk to win a match in the last round.

Runners up finishes were Devane Dodgens (Freshman/Chippewa Hills/125), Cody Stenberg (Freshman/Reeths-Puffer/141), Tyler Stenberg (Freshman/Reeths-Puffer/149), Lukas Gilmore (Freshman/Greenville/165), Joe Sika (Freshman/Whitehall/174), Steven Malloy (Freshman/Morley-Stanwood/184), Donavan Fouchey (Freshman/Oscoda/197) and Shawn Chamberlain (Sophomore/Dexter/285).
