The Muskegon Community College women’s basketball team took big steps as it prepares for post season play. The Jayhawks topped Glen Oakes Community College 54-47 at home on Wednesday.

Defense was the key in the win for MCC (14-10, 7-7) as it held Glen Oaks to 26.7 percent shooting from the floor. The win avenges a one-point loss Glen Oaks earlier in the season.

The Jayhawks jumped out to an early 14-2 lead off a match-up zone defense and led 26-12 just before halftime.

Glen Oakes would respond with three consecutive 3-pointers just before halftime.

The second half was a different story as the lead changed hands 15 different times.

Quanieshia McBride sparked MCC of the bench, scoring six straight points to put MCC up late in the game.

Katie McKinnon put MCC on top for good after she found the back door off a Sonnie Kurnat pass for a layup and a 49-47 lead. Taylor Brown sealed the win on a left-handed drive through traffic to put MCC up by four.

McKinnon finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds, Abby Rodriguez added 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals while Brown finished with 10 points and four assists.
