The Michigan High School Athletic Association’s girls basketball tourney kicked off on Monday and with it came some solid performances from area players.

Two players that stepped up at the Class A level were from Muskegon and Grand Haven.

First it was Muskegon’s Mardrekia Cook who helped lead her Big Reds over host Reeths-Puffer, 54-42. Cook led an 18-point lead in the third quarter when she scored six straight points and added an assist to teammate Jade Page.

The 6-0 sophomore forward showed a quick first step and a soft shot around the basket as sports fans will be able to see in the video below. Cook finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Next to lead the way was Grand Haven’s Taylor Craymer. The 6-1 senior forward scored 20 of her career high 25 points in the first half as her Bucs topped Grand Rapids Union, 68-49.

Craymer drained 3’s, hit midrange jumpers and drove to the basket in a display of true basketball skill. Check out the video below and see for yourself.
