A strong defensive performance led the Muskegon Catholic Central boys basketball team over Fruitport Calvary Christian, 54-29 in the Class D district championship game.

The win puts the Crusaders at 10-10 on the season. But with the a .500 record,  MCC’s takes home its fourth consecutive Class D district title.

“One of our goals was to try to reach .500.” said MCC Coach Lamar Jordan. “The record changes once we started the tournament and we started over and right now we are 2-0.”

The Crusaders had a 23-16 lead at halftime before going on a 15-6 third quarter run to lead 38-22 after three quarters.

Ian Tyler led the Crusaders with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Erik VanFossen added 10 points while Christian Martinez had nine points.

The Eagles leading scorer Mike Warren was held to 11 points, seven of those points came from the free throw line.  Carson Burgess added 10 points in a losing effort.

“He’s an excellent player (Warren). We just trapped him when we could and denied the ball when we could so he couldn’t’ touch it. It was our game plan to get the ball out of his hands and make other kids score. I thought we executed it perfectly.” stated coach Jordan after the victory.

Muskegon Catholic Central will head to the regional semifinals where they will play Fulton Middleton on Monday night at Big Rapids high school.
