The Kent City volleyball team opened its season Friday with three wins, two losses and one tie against various opponents.

In pool play, the Eagles lost to Zeeland West by scores of 25-17, 25-15; tied Thornapple-Kellogg 25-20, 19-25; and defeated Godwin 25-13, 25-17.

Kent City beat Grand Rapids Union 25-20, 25-23 in the quarterfinals and  Grand Rapids Covenant Christian 22-25, 25-21, 15-10 in the semifinals.

The Eagles lost to Calvin Christian 26-24, 25-18 in the finals.

Fruitport splits two matches in tournament  – The Fruitport volleyball team split a pair of matches with Forest Hills Northern in a tournament in Traverse City, winning the first 25-15, 25-13 and dropping the second in three games, 14-25, 25-23 and 15-10.

Grant played at the Grand Rapids MVOA Tournament and finished fifth on the day with a 2-1-1 record. In pool play, the Tigers topped Maple Valley 25-9, 25-14. They also beat Calvin Christian 26-24, 25-11 but split with Sparta 25-10, 16-25. In the gold bracket, Grant lost its first match in three games to Zeeland West 24-26, 25-21 and 11-15. Sierra Schuitema posted 26 digs, six aces, 69 assists, 18 kills and one block on the day. Brittanie Railling had 26 digs, seven aces and nine kills. Laura Bouwkamp put up 40 digs, 21 kills, two aces and three blocks. Emily Gabrielse had 56 digs and 10 aces, Hannah Anderson tallied 20 kills, four digs and three three blocks and Andrea Gardener had nine kills and three blocks.
