Noah Hendrick and Bryant Rebone teamed up to lead Fruitport past state-ranked Grand Rapids Covenant Christian 3-1 in boys soccer on Saturday. Hendrick scored two second-half goals off assists from Rebone.

The first goal of the match came off a Hendrick shot that went off the far post. He then gave his Fruitport team a 2-0 lead on a chip shot that found its way over the keeper.

“Both teams had really skilled forwards but the difference was the Trojan defense,” said Fruitport coach Greg Kobylak. “They played great individually and together as a unit. Standing out were JD Lory, Nathan Sturtevant, Lucas Leslie, Alec Parker and Kyle Winger.”

Goalie Conner Deneen posted the win for Fruitport who played to a 0-0 first half tie. The Trojans were outshot by the No. 2 Div. IV ranked Chargers 12-7.

“In goal, he (Deneen) had his best game of the season,” said Kobylak. “He forced the opponent to push shots wide and collected nine saves along the way.”

Jonah Kruegar gave the Trojans an insurance goal with 1:40 left in the match.
