Tom Marchin scored two goals and league scoring champion Matt Iacopelli added another, helping the Muskegon Lumberjacks to their first preseason win of the year in a 4-3 victory over Cedar Rapids Saturday in the USHL Atlantic Challenge in East Meadow, New York.

Marchin scored the only goal of the first period midway through the frame, giving the Lumberjacks a 1=0 lead. David Keefer and Matej Paulovic assisted on the goal.

Muskegon took command of the contest with a three-goal second period.

Cedar Rapids’ Jiri Fronk opened the second period scoring, knotting the game 1-1.

The Lumberjacks went back on top with a goal by Iacopelli about two minutes later, with assists from Griffen Malino and Joseph Cecconi.

Dante Palecco followed with a goal, assisted by Christian Wolanin, giving Muskegon a 3-1 edge. Cedar Rapids made it 3-2 on a goal by Andrew Oglevie.

Marchin’s second goal, with under a minute left in the second period, put the Lumberjacks back up 4-2.

Fronk scored his second goal in the third period, but that was as close as Cedar Rapids could get.

Eric Schierhorn got the victory in goal for Muskegon, which improved to 1-1 on the season. The Lumberjacks, who play Lincoln in the final game of the tournament Sunday, had a 26-23 shot advantage.
