The Orchard View Cardinals overcame a fourth quarter scare and defeated Fremont 33-14 Friday in a Lakes 8 Conference matchup.
A 90-yard interception return by Mike Parker gave the Cardinals a 7-0 lead in the second quarter.
The Cardinals broke a 7-7 tie later in the second quarter on a 23-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jayden Day. Day rushed for 66 yards in the game.
Mathias Keyes gave the Cardinals a 21-7 halftime lead on a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown. Keyes had two interceptions and five tackles on the night.
The game got tighter midway through the fourth quarter when Fremont scored on a three-yard touchdown run by Christian Wade on a fourth-and-goal play.
But OV’s Bobby Clanton ended the Packers’ hopes with a 37-yard touchdown run, making the score 27-14 late in the game. Clanton finished with 20 carries for 165 yards.
Parker ended the game with a 103 yard interception return on the final play.
“Fremont has a very good defense and they took away Bobby (Clanton) in the first half.” said Cardinals coach Joe Tanis. “But he is a huge kid and we expected him to have a great second half.”
Izzy Corona led the Cardinal defense with 11 tackles. OV improved to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
The Packers dropped to 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in the league.
