The Fremont boys cross country team finished second Saturday in the Michigan High School Athletic Association boys state finals in Brooklyn, Michigan.

The Packers, who won a regional title last weekend, finished with 102 points, just 19 shy of state champion Grand Rapids Christian.

Fremont’s top runner, Matt Zerfas, finished second overall with a time of 15:52. He was followed by teammates Sam Kaastra (seventh place, 16:02), Cole Hamilton (25th, 16:28), Andrew Goodspeed (34th, 16:39) and Sam Stitt (36th, 16:40).

In Division 1, Grand Haven finished in 22nd place behind state champion Rockford. The Bucs were led by Jack Nicholson, who finished 53rd with a 16:25 time. Nick Johnson (94th) ran a 16:53, John Miles (118th) finished the course in 17:04, Jordan Diephouse (129th) ran a 17:09 and Dominic Hentemann finished in 17:17.

In Division 4, North Muskegon finished 10th overall. Wesley Collins (11th place) led the Norse with a time of 16:52. Chase Eslick (14th) finished with a 16:56, Connor Durow (85th) ran an 18:30, Jake Lorenz (91st) finished with a time of 18:33 and Sam Hardy (126th) ran a 19:19.

Western Michigan Christian’s Braxton Snuffer finished 10th individually with a time of 16:37.2. Fruitport Calvary Christian’s Brendan Hamilton finished 24th, posting a time of 17:08.
