Will Roberson hit a contested layup, Eddie Tornes nailed a 3-pointer and Justin Kennedy had several blocked shots down the stretch Saturday to give the Muskegon Community College men’s basketball team an exciting 92-86 victory over Grand Rapids Community College.

GRCC scored the first seven points of the game but the Jayhawks recovered to take a 47-37 halftime lead. Tornes had 15 points before the break while Roberson added 10.

GRCC scored the first seven points of the second half. The score was tied five times before the Jayhawks fell behind by six points with 10 minutes remaining. MCC called timeout at that point, regrouped, and claimed the victory in the final few minutes.

“It was a game that you would expect when you play in a rivalry game,” said MCC Coach Dave Schlump. “It was good win for our program and for our team. We had some guys play as tough as it gets when it mattered the most.”

Tornes finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds, Roberson added 23 points, Deshawn Sanders scored 17 points while Aaron Sydnor had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Kennedy finished with nine rebounds and five blocked shots for MCC.
