The Muskegon Community College women’s basketball team claimed its first conference victory of the season with a 74-66 victory over Grand Rapids Community College on Monday.

MCC took control with a 37-19 run in the first 16 minutes of the second half.  The Jayhawk bench outscored the Raider bench 28-1. MCC also had a 55-41 advantage on the boards.

“This was a big win for us,” said MCC Coach Rob Recknagel. “Our depth was key and our unselfish play stood out as the difference.”

Francesca Cerniglia led the Jayhawks with 15 points and eight rebounds. Kayle Caverly added 14 points and six rebounds while Abby Rodriguez contributed 12 points and six rebounds.

MCC guards Taylor Brown and Morgan Giddings each dished out eight assists while Brown added six steals.

The Jayhawks are now 8-6 overall and 1-2 in Western Conference play.
