The Montague girls basketball team didn’t let a big lead go to waste in its 38-37 LSJ Logo incertWest Michigan Conference win over Hart on Thursday.

Sydney Stine sank a free throw with 9.2 seconds remaining to give the edge to the Wildcats, who led 32-21 going into the fourth quarter then withstood a furious Hart comeback.

Montague (2-2, 1-2) then got a defensive stop on the Pirates’ ensuing possession to secure the win.

“I give a lot of credit to Hart but I was glad we were able to hold on after nearly giving up a nice lead,” said Montague coach Brian Beebe. “We were pretty balanced the first three quarters but we need to learn how to handle success better.”

The Wildcats were led by Claudia Rumsey with 12 points and five steals, while junior forward Emma Flagstead tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Stine added nine points for the Wildcats.

Madison Hegedus led the Pirates with 13 points, while Colon finished with nine points and Baylee Draper scored eight.
