The Jayhawks, ranked fifth in the nation, finished in first place. Nine MCC wrestlers qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament, slated for Feb. 26-27 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Eight Jayhawks made the finals in their respective weight classes, and five were crowned champions. Winning top honors were Damion Short (125), TJ Barnes (157), Davon Jackson (165), Devan Richter (174) and Tyler Blagg (185).

Also qualifying for the national tournament by finishing second in their weight classes were Zane Corey (133), Adam Kehr (149) and Baker Hadwan (197).

Heavyweight Jon Morris took third in his weight class and and received a wild card selection to compete at the national tournament.

“We are wrestling well as a team,” said MCC Coach James Tietema, who was named Midwest District Coach of the Year. “Everyone’s working hard to improve and have high goals for the national tournament. I’m excited to get there to see how we do. It will be a close race at nationals with several teams having an opportunity for All-Americans and a team title.”
