West Michigan’s lone run was scored on an RBI single by Jose Azocar in the eighth inning, cutting the Whitecaps’ deficit to five runs. But the home team could get no closer.

The Captains were led by catcher Francisco Mejia with a double, triple and four RBIs while Yonathan Mendoza and Connor Marabell each chipped in with an RBI.

Whitecaps starting pitcher Beau Burrows, the Detroit Tigers’ top draft pick last summer, took the loss in his debut, allowing four runs on four hits in 3 2/3 of an inning.

West Michigan, now 2-2 on the season, will look to shed its losing streak on Tuesday at home against Lake County.
