The Detroit Tigers’ No. 1 draft pick pitched five scoreless innings against the host Dayton Dragons in the fourth and final game of the series.

But the Whitecaps couldn’t muster any offense and exited Dayton with a 1-0 loss, breaking their three-game winning streak.

The game was scoreless until the eighth inning when a sacrifice fly by Dragons third baseman Hector Vargas scored second baseman Shed Long to give Dayton the only run of the contest.

In the ninth, ‘Caps outfielder Cam Gibson singled to start the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Dragons catcher Tyler Stephenson with nobody out.

But West Michigan outfielder Derek Hill struck out swinging, Rashad Brown lined out to shortstop and Brett Pirtle lined out to left field, ending the game.

The Whitecaps open a seven-game home stand Monday night, beginning with a three-game series against the Lake County Captains at 6:35 p.m.
