After the Whitecaps responded from a 5-2 deficit to take a 7-5 lead, West Michigan allowed Lansing to have a seven-run eighth inning, which was too much to overcome.

The Whitecaps jumped out to a 2-0 third-inning lead when Rashad Brown hit a double to center field to score Jose Zambrano, then Derek Hill singled in Brown.

The Lugnuts scored four runs in the home half of the third to take a 4-2 lead.

Lansing added a run to lead 5-2 with the game headed to the sixth inning when West Michigan mounted its comeback.

In the sixth inning, the Whitecaps scored when Will Maddox doubled home Hill, then came around to score on an RBI single from Jose Azocar to cut the Lansing lead to 5-4. They tied the game at 5-5 when Brett Pirtle scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from Zambrano.

West Michigan took a 7-5 lead in the eighth with a two-run home run by Franklin Navarro that scored Zambrano.

But Lansing ultimately scored eight runs in the bottom of the inning to take a lead it wouldn’t surrender.

West Michigan scored two runs in the top of the ninth in an attempted comeback but fell short.
