Pitcher Kyle Dowdy continued his hot streak for the West Michigan Whitecaps on Saturday.
Dowdy, who pitched a complete-game shutout in his previous outing, allowed only one run and struck out nine in seven innings as the Whitecaps defeated the Lake County Captains 5-2 in front of 7.772 fans at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park.
Dowdy, who scattered eight hits, improved to 8-2 on the season. The victory snapped the Whitecaps’ three-game losing streak.
The offense gave Dowdy enough to work with in the second inning. Back-to-back RBI doubles by David Gonzalez and Cam Gibson gave the ‘Caps a 3-0 lead after two innings.
An infield hit by Jose Azocar in the sixth led to a throwing error by shortstop Willi Castro to score two runs, giving West Michigan a 5-1 edge.
West Michigan relief pitcher Toller Boardman allowed a run over the final two innings to sew up the victory.
Arvicent Perez tallied two hits for the Whitecaps to record his fourth straight multi-hit game.
West Michigan improved its record to 15-17 in the second half of the season and 54-45 overall. Lake County fell to 14-20 in the second half and 54-50 overall.
The Whitecaps will continue their eight-game home stand with a 1 p.m. game against Lake County on Sunday.
