With the loss, West Michigan was swept in the three-game series with Fort Wayne and dropped to 14-17-1 in the secondwhitecaps logo not for feature art half.

The Whitecaps are in fifth place in the Midwest League Eastern Division second half standings, 6 ½ games behind first place South Bend.

After falling behind 3-1 to begin the game, West Michigan responded by scoring the next six runs to take a 7-3 lead in the top of the sixth.

But Fort Wayne scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the its deficit to 7-6. Fort Wayne added runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take an 8-7 lead that West Michigan couldn’t overcome.

The Whitecaps had a total of 15 hits on the night. They were led by David Gonzalez with three hits, while Jose Azocar, Arvicent Perez, Jose Zambrano, and Cam Gibson each added two.

Gibson had a two-run homer in the fourth inning.

West Michigan will return home on Saturday when they open a six-game home stand with a 7 p.m. first pitch against Lake County.
