The Whitehall football team opened its season with a thrilling 50-47 last minute victory over host Kelloggsville on Friday night.

With 47 seconds remaining, quarterback Casey Huizenga found Lukas Evans with a nine-yard touchdown pass to give the Vikings a 48-47 lead. The two-point conversion run by Jack MacArthur was successful, giving Whitehall its final margin of victory.

With 16 seconds remaining, Viking defensive back Justin Brown intercepted a Kelloggsville pass at the Whitehall 10 yard line to seal the win.

The game was tied 27-27 at halftime before Whitehall outscored Kelloggsville 23-20 in the second half.

Whitehall was led by Joe Dowdell with 188 yards on 29 carries and three touchdowns, while running back Tyler Russell added 77 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries.

Justin Brown had 56 yards receiving and one touchdown catch, while also adding a rushing touchdown.

Whitehall’s defensive effort was led by Brown and Dowdell, who each had interceptions.
