The North Muskegon football squad earned its first victory of the season Friday, cruising to a 28-6 win over Mason County Central in West Michigan Conference action.

North Muskegon’s Vernonell Smith opened the scoring on an interception return to give the Norse a 7-0 advantage.

The Norse added a late first quarter touchdown on a 12-yard run by Chandler Edwards to take a 14-0 lead.

The Spartans got on the board with 23 seconds left in the second quarter when quarterback Travis Tyndall found Dylan Hearns with a 36-yard touchdown pass.

North Muskegon led 14-6 at halftime.

The Norse padded their lead in the third quarter with a seven-yard touchdown run by Smith, then closed the scoring early in the fourth on a scoop-and-score fumble recovery by Cameron Waller.

Smith finished with 89 yards on 14 carries while Edwards added 69 yards on the ground.

The Spartans were paced by Tyndall with 70 yards passing and 79 yards rushing.
