The Hesperia Panthers football season came to an abrupt halt on Friday night with a 48-14 loss to Pewamo-Westphalia in a Division 7 pre-district contest.

The scoring started when Pewamo’s Jared Smith punched in a two-yardsport-clips-football-2016-b rushing touchdown at the 4:11 mark of the first quarter.

The Panthers didn’t trail for long. Kanin Witte took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to tie the game at 7-7, and that was the score after one quarter.

Smith scored two more times for the Pirates in the second quarter, from eight and seven yards out, respectively, to give the hosts a 21-7 halftime lead.

Pewamo-Westphalia extended its lead to 35-7 in the third quarter with a 68-yard touchdown run by Bryce Thelen and a 27-yard scoring scamper by Smith.

In the fourth quarter, Cameron Wirth scored on two rushing touchdowns to extend the Pirates’ advantage to 48-7.

The Panthers ended their season on a high note, going 64 yards on nine plays on their final possession and scoring on a three-yard run by Gage Balkema.

Balkema finished with 69 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown while Witte had 85 yards on 15 carries.

Smith ran for 205 yards on 29 carries and scored four times for Pewamo-Westphalia.
