The West Michigan Lake Hawks are Muskegon’s franchise in the American Basketball Association. The league is a direct descendant of the original ABA, which was a competitor of the NBA in the 1960s and 70s.

The local team is run by Coach Ron Jenkins, a former Western Michigan Christian and Muskegon Community College basketball coach. Building the four-year-old franchise, and making it a permanent part of Muskegon-area sports scene, is a passion for Jenkins, who is also the assistant athletic director at Muskegon Catholic Central.
