The Ludington boy’s basketball team had a tough assignment in the Class B district tournament opener at Benzie Central on Monday, playing state-ranked Big Rapids.

The Orioles responded to the challenge well, outscoring the Cardinals 22-5 in the third quarter and emerging with a big 63-49 victory.

Calvin Hackert led the third-quarter surge for Ludington by knocking down three 3-pointers.

Hackert led the Orioles with 25 points while Noah Laman added 16.

Demetri Martin had 28 points for Big Rapids.

Ludington, now 19-2, will play Manistee on Wednesday in the district semifinals.
