The West Michigan Whitecaps used early scoring to defeat Lake County 6-2 on Friday night.

With the victory, West Michigan improved its overall record to 7-8 on the year, and nows sit in sixth place in the Midwest League Eastern Division, 2 1/2 games behind first-place Dayton.

The scoring started in the bottom of the first when Cam Gibson hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Danny Woodrow who started the inning with a triple.

Lake County scored in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1. West Michigan took a 2-1 lead in the second behind a Josh Lester home run.

In the third inning, the Whitecaps extended their lead to 4-1 when Will Savage scored on a wild pitch and Cam Gibson singled Woodrow home.

The Whitecaps added two runs in the fifth inning when Jacob Robson hit an RBI single and Blaise Salter hit an RBI double to make the score 6-1.

Lake County scored a run in the top of the ninth.

West Michigan reliever Joe Navilhon picked up the win on Friday, pitching three innings and striking out five batters. Gibson and Woodrow led the offense with two hits apiece.

West Michigan will continue its home series with Lake County at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
