The Spring Lake softball team took home its first regional championship in school history with a 7-6 win over Wayland in the Division 2 regional final at Hope College on Saturday.

Spring Lake held a 7-3 lead in the seventh inning before a Wayland three-run homer run cut the Laker lead to one. After back-to-back walks, Spring Lake’s Jenna Core tracked down a long fly ball to the fence for the final out of the game.

Leah Vaughan picked up the win on the mound while Lauren Somers had two triples and two runs to lead the offense. Kileah Rymal added two hits, two runs and two RBIs for the Lakers.

Earlier in the day, Spring Lake defeated Hudsonville Unity Christian 6-0 to advance to the finals against Wayland.

Vaughan also picked up the win in that game, striking out 12 while Linsey Paggeot had three hits and Lauren Somers added a 2-run single.

The Lakers are now 37-4 overall and will advance to play Stevensville Lakeshore at 3:30 on Tuesday at Davenport University in the state quarterfinals.
