The West Michigan Whitecaps defeated Dayton 7-5 on Tuesday night behind strong offensive nights from Derek Hill and Danny Pinero.

Pinero led West Michigan with four hits on the night and two RBIs while Hill finished a home run short of the cycle with three hits. Cole Bauml also had two RBIs for West Michigan.

Starting pitcher Spenser Watkins picked up his eight win of the year, tossing six innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eight. Reliever John Schreiber picked up his ninth save, pitching one and 2/3 innings, striking out two.

The Whitecaps remain in first place of the Midwest League Eastern Division second half standings with a 36-14 record. West Michigan is three and a half games ahead of Fort Wayne. Overall on the season, west Michigan is 81-36.

West Michigan will continue its series at Dayton on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
