The Spring Lake football team dropped its season opener 38-14 to NorthPointe Christian on Saturday in the West Michigan Sports Commission’s
Gridiron Classic at Grand Valley State University.
The game was tied 7-7 after one quarter when Spring Lake’s Gavin Paul hauled in a touchdown pass from quarterback Caleb Montgomery.
The Lakers then took a 14-10 lead into halftime when Montgomery threw a touchdown pass to Zack Benneck.
But that was the last Spring Lake score of the day. NorthPointe went on to take a 17-14 lead after three quarters and scored its final 21 points in the final quarter.
C.J. Curtis led Northpointe with four rushing touchdowns.
