Any time I try to do something, I always find  I get the best results when the task doesn’t involve numbers.

So after losing a tie-breaker for first place in the Week 1 LSJ Editors Gridiron Picks, which was based on guessing the total number of points in one game, I was determined not to have my Week 2 results come down to me and numbers – unless those numbers were 15 and 0 (meaning 15 correct picks).

They weren’t, but they were close.

I finished Week 2 with a 14-1 mark, just good enough to hold off Dave Hart, who finished with a 13-2 record, and Nate Thompson and Jason Goorman with 11-4 marks.

Everyone had a pretty good week except LSJ editor Steve Gunn, who only picked eight winners out of 15 games. Ouch.

The difference-maker was the Fruitport-Spring Lake game, because I was the only one to pick the Trojans to emerge victorious.

I appreciate what Fruitport did for me last week. But the Trojans are playing in one of three LSJ Spotlight Games this week, and they happen to be facing the Muskegon Big Reds.

Coming off two big games to start the season, the Big Reds might be sluggish to start, but I expect them to roll the final three quarters for the win.

North Muskegon, which hosts Ravenna in another Spotlight game, has a hard-hitting defense, but it lacks depth. I expect Ravenna to follow the same script that Muskegon will follow against Fruitport.

Mona Shores hosts Rockford in the third Spotlight game. This is an easy one for me. I didn’t pick the Sailors in Week 1, and they won. I learned my lesson and picked them last week, and they didn’t let me down. That sounds like a winning formula.

Other games of note will see Reeths-Puffer improve to 3-0 with a win at Grand Rapids Union, Muskegon Catholic downing Orchard View and Oakridge remaining unbeaten.

Checking out all the picks for this week, it looks like there’s widespread consensus on quite a few games that have clear favorites, but disagreement over some others, like Grandville at Grand Haven, Ravenna at North Muskegon, Morley-Stanwood at Hesperia and Detroit Community at Muskegon Heights.

Week 2 LSJ editors pick results: Dave Tomczak 14-1, Dave Hart 13-2, Jason Goorman 11-4, Nate Thompson 11-4, Andrew Johnson 10-5, Steve Gunn 8-7.

Overall standings: Tomczak 26-4, Hart 24-6, Johnson 22-8, Thompson 21-9, Goorman 21-9, Gunn 18-12.
