A bad first quarter ended up haunting the Muskegon Big Reds in their matchup with Chicago Curie in the Muskegon Basketball Showcase on Saturday.
Curie grabbed a commanding 21-6 lead after one quarter and left town with a 57-48 victory at Redmond-Potter Gymnasium.
The middle quarters were pretty even,, with Muskegon grabbing an 11-8 advantage in the second quarter and Curie outscoring the Big Reds 13-8 in the third.
Muskegon had its best run in the fourth quarter, outscoring their out-of-state visitors 23-15, but it wasn’t quite enough to alter the outcome.
Willie Shanks Jr. paced the Big Reds with 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Eonte Tornes also scored 14 for Muskegon, which hurt itself by missing 16 of 30 free throws.
Maurice Commander had a game-high 16 points for Chicago Curie.
