A strong showing in the first and fourth quarters propelled the Mona Shores girls basketball team to a 60-41 victory over Grand Rapids Union on Monday in a Class A district quarterfinal game.

The Sailors outscored the Red Hawks 14-4 in the first quarter and 16-6 in the fourth to gain their margin of victory.

Nia Miskel had a huge night for Mona Shores, scoring 17 points and grabbing a school record 24 rebounds.

Julia Tierman scored a career-high 21 points for the Sailors, and contributed five assists and four rebounds. Ryleigh Wehler added 13 points, four assists and three blocks.

The Sailors now advance to Wednesday’s district semifinals against Grand Haven at 7:30 p.m. on the Bucs’ home court.
