The Muskegon boys basketball team rode a hot first quarter to a 56-46 victory over Northview on Monday in a first-round Class A district game at Northview High School.

The Big Reds gained their winning edge by outscoring the Wildcats 14-2 in the first quarter. The teams played evenly, with no more than a two-point differential, in the other three quarters.

Eonte Tornes paced Muskegon with 22 points, including three triples. Vern Nash has 13 points, including three 3’s, while Willie Shanks had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Cody Tierney led Northview with 13 points.

The Big Reds now advance to play Grand Rapids Union at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the district semifinals at Reeths-Puffer High School.
