After grabbing a big lead over heavily favored Grand Rapids Catholic Central, the Spring Lake boy’s basketball team ended up falling to the Cougars 63-52 in the Class B regional semifinals at Grand Rapids West Catholic on Monday.

Spring Lake came out of the gates on fire, nailing five 3-pointers pointers and taking a commanding 26-9 lead after one quarter.

But GRCC, which beat the Lakers twice in the regular season, had a 17-2 advantage in the second quarter and pulled within two points, 28-26, at halftime

The third quarter was pretty even and Spring Lake emerged with a 44-43 lead. But GRCC completed its comeback in the fourth quarter, hitting 7 of 9 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Jack VanWingen led the Spring Lake offense with 18 points while Sam Johnson added 14 and Griffin Lorimer had 11 points and seven assists.

Mr. Basketball finalist Marcus Bingham scored a game-high 29 points for GRCC.

The Lakers finished the season with a 19-5 record.
