The Whitehall boy’s basketball team held off a tough challenge from Fruitport on Monday to claim a 47-37 victory in the first round of the Class B district tournament at Spring Lake High School.

Fruitport led 10-9 after one quarter and Whitehall held a slight 23-20 advantage at halftime. The Vikings gained their edge in the third quarter, when they outscored the Trojans 13-6.

Brandon Rake had a big night for Whitehall with 15 points and 20 rebounds. Ethan McKenzie added 12 points and 11 rebounds while Justin Brown snagged 10 boards.

Cameron Oleen paced Fruitport with 15 points.

Whitehall now advances to Wednesday’s semifinals against Oakridge at 6 p.m. at Spring Lake.
