The West Michigan Whitecaps started their 10 game road trip with a 4-2 loss at South Bend on Friday night.

Garrett McCain gave the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead in the top of third when he singled home Alexis Garcia.

However, that lead didn’t last long as South Bend responded with two runs of their own in the home half of the inning.

Down 3-1 in the eighth inning, Reynaldo Rivera doubled home Cole Peterson to cut the Whitecaps deficit to 3-2. The Whitecaps offense was unable to scratch across any more runs, ultimately falling 4-2.

Starting pitcher Brad Bass allowed three runs and struck out five in six innings of work while the Whitecap offense was led by Peterson and Rivera who each had two hits.

The Whitecaps are now 26-21 overall and in third place of the Midwest League Eastern Division, 4 and ½ games behind first place Lansing.

The Whitecaps will continue their series at South Bend on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
