Spring Lake suffered its first football loss of the season, falling to Grand Rapids West Catholic 38-21 on Friday in an O-K Blue Conference game.

The Lakers trailed 13-0 at the end of the first quarter and 35-0 at halftime.

Spring Lake finally scored its first points if the game during the third quarter on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Zach Keyser to Noah Verlinde to cut the Laker deficit to 35-7 after three quarters.

The Lakers added a 19-yard rushing touchdown by Mitch Payne to cut the deficit to 35-14.

Spring Lake closed out the scoring after giving up a field goal with a five-yard touchdown scamper by Keyser.

Keyser paced the Lakers with 101 rushing yards and one touchdown while throwing for 127 yards on 10-for-15 passing and one score through the air. Payne caught four passes for 68 yards.

The Lakers were led defensively by Aleck Fredrick with 12 tackles while Gavin Alban added eight.

Spring Lake, which will travel to play Grand Rapids Catholic Central next Friday, is now 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in league play.
